Content Management Systems (CMS)

A web content management system (CMS) is a software program, which helps to maintain and display web content. The range of functionalities of the various CMS systems differs widely. Quite often though, a somewhat popular function of a particular CMS finds its way into other CMS systems after a while.

Some CMS systems are of a more specialised purpose than others. You will find specialised software as e.g. WordPress (blogging system) or phpBB (bulletin board system) and rather general CMS systems like Joomla, Drupal or TYPO3. It depends on what you're gonna do what is best for you.

Many excellent CMS systems are free open source products keeping you happy. If you're a big enterprise you might want to consider the commercial enterprise content management systems (ECM) as well.

Various - The time is wrong

The sites clock is wrong

The time of the site's system isn't matching the time on ours. This means one of our systems or both have an invalid time. Internet servers should actually be thorough with their system time, since badly set clocks cause quite some agony when looking for errors in the log files. Usually web sites apply a so called NTP service to synchronize their system time automatically.

The clock of the website server seems to be 3883 seconds late.

Sitemap - the site is offering a sitemap for search engines

A sitemap for search engines is a listing of all pages of a web site. It is encoded according the the Sitemaps XML Protocol. A sitemaps helps the search engines to learn quickly which pages exist and when they were changed. This helps to produce better search results.

Search engines learn about a sitemap usually by one of the following ways:

  1. An entry in a site's robots.txt control file. This is a central configuration for all search engines. The robots.txt file gets a line with the address of the sitemap as follows: Sitemap: http://webmastercoffee.com/sitemap.gz
  2. Ping a search engine. You need to ping each search engine seperately at its ping interface address. Possible advantage: you control, which engines are going to see your sitemap and which don't.

The sitemap finds at: http://www.ukflyfisher.co.uk/sitemap.gz

What is web tracking?

Web tracking services and statistics services are trying to figure out as much as possible about web visitors. How many visitors came when to the site? How long did they stay? Where on the site did they click on (heatmap), which products did they look at? Where is the IP of the visitor located, what browser and screen resolution do they use? And more...

Did you know, that you have most probably flash cookies? And that these cookies remain, even when you delete your browser cookies and even when you switch your browser? Have a look at them with the flash cookie's settings manager (find link below).

Web server MS IIS

Microsoft IIS - Internet Information Services (Version 5.0)

What is a web server?

As soon as you load a website with you browser you have been practically communicating with a web server. Your browser has sent the address of the site you want to visit to a web server system belonging to the address. The web server then collected the content for this address and delivered it to your browser.

The most commonly used web server is the free system Apache HTTP (version 1 and 2). It is followed by various versions of Microsofts commercial Webserver IIS.
